This book is a user experience (UX) reference manual: a handy guide to different UX tools and techniques to read from cover-to-cover, or to dip into as the need arises. It is designed to be both a helpful and pragmatic handbook to help digital design practitioners add valuable user insights to their real world projects.

This book has been co-authored by James Chudley and Jesmond Allen. We are both User Experience Directors at cxpartners, a user experience consultancy based in Bristol, UK. Between us, we have more than 30 years experience of designing digital products for clients such as Orange, Vodafone, TUI Travel, Aardman, Nokia, Expedia, Hotels.com, and the BBC. Over that time, we have seen our job titles vary from “web designer,” “usability engineer,” “information architect,” “user-centered design consultant,” and beyond.

We’ve used illustrations, examples, top tips, and detailed how-tos to share with you the knowledge we’ve built up working on user experience projects both within UX consultancies, design agencies, and large public and private sector organizations.

What is this book about?

This book is aimed at UX practitioners as well as digital designers and developers who may not have everyday access to a UX specialist. We hope that it will be an invaluable reference for anyone involved in taking digital products from conception to deployment and beyond. We work for a UX consultancy, hence lots of use of the words “client” and “project.” However, the tools and techniques are just as relevant for use by in house teams. The UX research and design tools and techniques we outline in this book are applicable to the web and other platforms such as applications, mobile apps, and emerging devices and platforms.

We’ve documented the processes we go through every day at work and we’ve shared lots of the secrets that we’ve learned along the way. Of course, the way we do UX isn’t the only way to do UX, and we love to learn new things. The unifying factor is the desire to put the user at the heart of any design work we undertake.
