Purpose of the Book The objective of this book is to introduce chemical engineering students to the basic principles and calculation techniques used in the field and to acquaint them with the fundamentals of the application of material and energy balances in chemical engineering. The book is mainly intended for junior chemical engineers. It exposes them to problems in material and energy balances that arise in relation to problems involving chemical reactors. The focus is on single and multiphase systems related to material and energy balances. This material is introduced in a manner that there will be little lecture content. Most of the material presented covers work on problem solving skills. The material intrusion theory is explained briefly and simply to make this book more user-friendly.

Many examples are included and solved in a simple and understandable format that explains the related theory. A few examples related to unsteady state material and energy balance are solved using MATLAB®/Simulink®, and this enables students to use such software in solving complicated problems of material and energy balances. The book can be covered in one semester if based on a four-hour contact course or two semesters on a two-hour contact course. The new edition contains additional solved examples and homework problems. A new chapter related to single and multiphase systems has been added.

Course Objectives:

At the completion of this course, students will 1. Acquire skills in quantitative problem solving, specifically the ability to think quantitatively (including numbers and units), the ability to translate words into diagrams and mathematical expressions, the ability to use common sense to interpret vague and ambiguous language in problem statements, the ability to make judicious use of approximations and reasonable assumptions to simplify problems

2. Understand processes typical of those found in the chemical and bio process industries

3. Know general principles used in process engineering, particularly stoichiometry, material and energy balances, gas laws, and phase equilibria

Course Outcomes:

Every course that a student takes should further his or her knowledge, building on what was previously learned. By the end of this course, each student should be able to 1. Explain the concepts of dimensions, units, psychrometry, steam properties, and conservation of mass and energy

2. Solve steady-state and transient mass and energy balance problems involving multiple-unit processes and recycle, bypass, and purge streams

3. Solve and understand simple unsteady-state mass and energy balances 4. Solve more complicated problems using the software appropriate for the problem 5. Present the solutions to engineering problems in both oral and written form in a clear and concise manner.
